NFC is an initialism of National Football Conference and AFC of American Football Conference. Both NFC and AFC are part of the NFL (National Football League). Football is football, you’d say, right? So why bother about NFC and AFC? Well, all fans of football must know the difference between NFC and AFC because these association have rival teams as members. Here, then, is the difference and the similarity between AFC and NFC that will help you understand which association is your favorite:
- NFC and AFC are associations of the NFL. Each association has 4 divisions, and is made up of 16 teams. So, both associations make up for 32 teams on the NFL.
- Both associations were formed in 1970 when NFL merged with AFL (American Football League). NFC’s logo is a big and blue “N” that contains 4 stars (one star for each division). AFC’s logo is a big and red “A” that contains 4 stars.
- Both NFC and AFC conduct playoffs to determine the champion team. The payoffs are conducted at the end of the season. The champion teams then face each other in the Super Bowl. The winner is crowned the NFL champ. In this sense, both teams are rivals though both belong to the NFL.
- Now, though both these associations are rivals and will remain rivals, they have merged together to form the Pro League, a move that has increased their fan following.
